Earlier today, the European Mountain Running Championships took place in Turkey. In the team competition, Italy won for the men and Great Britain won the women’s title. Monika Fürholz of Switzerland was first in the women’s race and Ahmet Arslan of Turkey won the men’s race. Arslan has now won the last six European championships!

Laura Haefeli (44, Del Norte, CO) is the first American woman to win an individual medal at the World Mountain Running Championships (2007) and was a member of the 2004, 2005 teams and gold medal winning women’s team in 2007. She is also a former record holder of the Masters Record at More >

Maria Dalzot (24, Morgantown, WV) is the defending NACAC Mountain Running Champions. She was a member of the 2007 Junior U.S. Mountain Running Team (USMRT) that took the silver medal at Worlds in Switzerland. Dalzot competed for the West Virginia University Cross Country team that won the Big East Championships in 2007 and placed top ten at NCAA Cross Country Nationals. While all eyes in the US will be on the Loon Mountain Race on Sunday to see who gets a spot on the 2012 US Women’s Mountain Running Team, across the pond in Europe, the focus will be on the European Mountain Running Championships. With athletes from across Europe coming together to compete in Denizli, Turkey, the race promises to be a preview of potential things to come at the World Mountain Running Championships in Ponte di Legno, Italy on September 2nd.

Kasie Enman, 2011 World Mountain Running Champion, will try to make the team again this coming weekend at the Loon Mountain Race. Trail Runner Magazine just did a great interview with her so we thought we’d share that instead of a few highlights. Enjoy!
This trio of Colorado athletes have had a variety of successes in many disciplines, including road, trails and snowshoes.
Michele Suszek made her first USMRT in 2011 with an impressive 2nd place finish at the Cranmore Hill Climb. Although best known as a road runner before that, Michele has always had a love of trail running. Besides her strong showing at Cranmore and then great showing as well at the WMRC in Albania on a very tough course, Michele also qualified and ran in the Olympic Marathon Trials in 2012 and also won the USATF 50 Mile Trail Championships.

In 2008, RunningRaw.com founder, Tim Van Orden, documented his journey through the 6 races in the USATF-New England Mountain Running Circuit. He talked about his race strategy, his diet and lots of funny commentary as well. In these two videos, he gives you a glimpse of the Loon Mountain Race course and the race itself (with a liberal sprinkling of Yankee dry humor mixed in). Megan was a member of the 2009 US Mountain Running Team that competed in Italy. Megan is looking to return to Italy this September to again represent her country. An accomplished trail and mountain runner, most recently Megan finished 2nd at the USATF Half Marathon Trail Championships in Bend, Oregon. Megan’s impressive career includes a win at the Pikes Peak Ascent as well as a 3rd place finish in the Pikes Peak Marathon. Tim Chichester, who made his first US Mountain Running Team at this year’s Mt. Washington Road Race, was named Marathon Sports/New England Runner Magazine Athlete of the Month for June 2012. Tim finished Mt. Washington in a time of 1:02:06 to secure his spot on the team. Tim will join the rest of the squad this September in Ponte di Legno, Italy to compete at the World Mountain Running Championships. Congratulations from all of us at the US Mountain Running Team!
