Team USA will compete alongside squads from Mexico and Canada at the 11th North American Central American Caribbean (NACAC) Mountain Running Championships on Sunday, July 20, at Carrera La Chupinaya in Ajijic, Jalisco, the same venue which hosted the event in 2011. The teams are comprised of up to four men and four women with the top two finishers scoring for their respective country. The 2014 US team includes past NACAC team members as well as newcomers to this championship event.

Over 1500 runners participated in the Moab Trail Marathon, 1/2 Marathon and 5k held in conjunction with the USA 1/2 Marathon Trail Championships. Near freezing temperatures greeted many runners who arrived before sunrise but a welcome sun and cloudless sky made for perfect running weather by the 9:00 AM start.

Team USA was victorious sweeping the top positions in both the men’s and women’s race with 2012 World Mountain Running Championship’s bronze medalist Morgan Arritola covering the 8-kilometer course in 42:31, followed by teammate Megan Lizotte in 46:03,for a team score of 3 points. Canadafinished in silver-medal position with Meggan Franks and Sarah Bergeron-Larouch in fifth and sixth position to score 11 points. Mexico’s Ana Rosa Gomez Velazquez and Sandra Lizeth Lopez Navarro scored 19 points to earn the bronze medal.

The 2013 USA Mountain Running Championships held in conjunction with the Cranmore Hill Climb will start at 8:15 AM (women) & 9:15 AM (men) on Sunday, July 21. 300 runners will toe the start line on the summit of the Mt. Cranmore Ski Area and compete for spots on the USA Mountain Running Team (top 6 men, top 4 women). Over 50 elite trail runners from around the United States, Canada and Mexico will compete for national championship glory and for the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Mountain Running Championship title. The nation’s best mountain runners will literally descend on North Conway, New Hampshire’s Cranmore Mountain on Sunday, July 21. The 26th Cranmore Hill Climb presented by Northeast Delta Dental offers a four-kilometer loop course, which the men will run three times and women will run two times. The route is a mixture of single-track trail, wide pathways, meadows, rocky terrain, and some steep ascents and descents to test the mettle of competitors.

The USA 50 Mile Trail Championships was hosted by Nueces and race directors Joe and Joyce Prusaitis. Their races always have a festive and social atmosphere, from the day before the race until the morning after the race. Friends gather from all over to discuss apprehensions or excitement of the coming challenge beforehand, then reassemble post-race to share their experiences of the day. This race day began with a light frost and temperatures in the mid-30s, but warmed throughout the day into the mid-60s. Saturday morning in Moab came crisp and cool. But with the sun rising over the desert landscape, the temperatures heat up quickly as did the racing at Moab Trail Marathon. The Moab Trail Marathon was serving as the USA Trail Marathon Championships which attracted a highly competitive field on both the men’s and women’s sides. Toeing the line were US mountain team members, previous male and female trail/mountain champions, fast roadies(2:14 marathon guy, 35 minute 10K gal), hardened mountain goats, and a Spartan Racing World Champion.
